ČSSD can sit back and let the government's reform plans implode, or it can actively try to discredit them. So far, it's trying a lackluster combination of the two. Opposition within both ODS and KDU-ČSL to the reforms is making ČSSD's job easy, but Alexandr Mitrofanov of Právo wondered why Jiří Paroubek's party isn't being more pro-active, esp. when Topolánek's arrogance makes it so easy for the opposition to win points with voters. Mitrofanov suggested in The Prague Post that the problem is partly with Paroubek himself. His huge ego, Mitrofanov said, is visible in his every word and step. Which raises the question: How can someone who himself is seen as being so arrogant be effective in attacking Topolánek's reform arrogance? He can't. If Topolánek manages to pass his reforms, his arrogance will largely be forgiven, but the same can't be said of Paroubek's.[Czech Republic tax taxation public finance]
