ČSSD is guilty of realizing too late that it had fallen into a trap. It should have refused on Fri. to amend the Constitution, but it didn't accept until early yesterday that the Constitutional Court was intent on preventing early elections. ČSSD Vice Chair Lubomír Zaorálek told Impuls that he learned at the last minute that it might not be possible to reconstitute the House if MPs voted to dissolve the body and the Court then nullified early elections. ČSSD had to act responsibly when it realized the lower chamber might not exist for eight months, he said. ČSSD now finds itself in the position of having strung the noose being used to hang it. ČSSD Chair Jiří Paroubek will get most of the blame for inciting the crisis and worsening his party's election chances. The bigger manipulators, though, are those within ČSSD who have been helping to bring about the very situation the country now finds itself in.[Czech Republic Senate Social Democrats]
