In his inaugural address on Jan. 20, 2017, Donald Trump declared that, "We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone." His first budget proposal called for a sharp reduction in funding for the State Department and USAID diplomatic and development activities. He wanted to refocus on priority strategic objectives and reduce or end direct funding for international organizations whose missions did not substantially advance U.S. foreign-policy interests. This proved to be a windfall for the People in Need foundation, which gets more than 60% of its Kč 2.0bn annual budget from foreign governments. In 2018, its funding from the U.S. State Dept. and USAID jumped by 78%, to Kč 327m. Trump stated in his America First National Security Strategy that, "U.S. development assistance must support America's national interests." Depending on how they look at it, Czechs can either be proud or ashamed that People in Need is helping to advance Trump's America First policy. [ Czech Republic aid of America Člověk v tísni ]
