Bushwhacked, but life goes on
Whenever we write anything that can even be remotely
construed as pro-American,we get a slew of emails accusing us
of inherent bias. This keeps us honest, but it also makes it
difficult to praise those damn Yanks when they deserve it.
George W. Bush's projected victory yesterday will only make this
worse. The world was largely against him, as are most of our
readers. But there's at least one bright spot in yesterday's
outcome worth mentioning. It means that U.S. Amb. William
Cabaniss, a friend of W.'s and a political appointee, will get to
finish his term in Prague. If John Kerry had won, all politically
appointed ambassadors would be expected to resign. Cabaniss,
with his Southern charm and political astuteness, is widely
considered the best U.S. ambassador the CR has had. If anyone
can ease the rift between Bush and his local skeptics, Cabaniss
can.
