First-strike option
2007-03-05
Debate-show host Václav Moravec of Czech TV has an uncanny
ability to interrupt speakers just as they touch on the key issue.
His critics say this is proof of his membership in the political
establishment. He devoted 2.5 hours yesterday to missile
defense but tried to steer the debate away from the question of
whether the bases in Poland and the CR would be part of a U.S.
nuclear first-strike capability and would not necessarily serve
only a defensive purpose. To our knowledge, MP Lubomír
Zaorálek of ÈSSD yesterday became the first Czech politician to
raise the issue in public. He cited the Foreign Affairs article that
claimed the U.S. is seeking nuclear primacy allowing it to wipe
out Russia's or China's arsenals in a first strike. Missile defense
in Central Europe could perhaps be used to counter any
warheads that escaped destruction. It's an issue that deserves
uncensored debate.
