Prince's honor
2008-04-18
"If you were anybody else, I'd blow you away," said hit man Jack
Nicholson in "Prizzi's Honor" to a woman who had cheated his
mafia family. He couldn't bring himself to kill her, because he
loved her. And so it is with the Czech media and Foreign
Minister Karel Schwarzenberg. If anyone else had broken his vow
to leave the cabinet should Jiøí Èunek return, they'd have blown
him away with their criticism. But they're in love with
Schwarzenberg. Exceptions exist, of course. Erik Tabery of
Respekt, which is part-owned by Schwarzenberg, said his
decision was unacceptable. Jaroslav Plesl of LN also jumped on
his case, as did blogger Jiøí Pehe on Aktualne.cz. In general,
though, the media have stopped talking about Prince Karel's loss
of nobility. At least for the moment. In the end, Nicholson's own
sense of honor prevailed, and he put a knife through his
darling's throat, love or no love.
