The cost-plus Olympics
2007-04-10
Anyone lucky enough to attend an event at Sazka Arena no
doubt had a wonderful time. Even the naysayers have been
forced to admit that it's a great addition to Prague. But was it
worth it? Those who paid for it are beginning to wonder. The
cost has ballooned from Kè 2.5bn to about Kè 14bn, to the
detriment of the ÈSTV sports unions that would have otherwise
received the money. Not phased, Sazka CEO Aleš Hušák is in the
middle of things again with the bid for the 2016 Olympics. His
arena would be one of the principal benefactors. Hušák could
use the Games as a reason to refurbish the facility when the time
came. More importantly, though, Hušák's involvement means
that Olympic organizers can call on his 150 loyal lawmakers for
making sure the Olympics turn out to be just as wonderful an
experience as a visit to Sazka Arena itself. Complete with a cost
fit for a king.
