Tuition and industrial policy
2010-06-16
Opponents of university tuition will have to give up their no-
tolerance fight soon and instead concentrate on trying to
influence the final parameters of the fee system they so fear.
Like it or not, ODS, TOP 09 and VV will have the strength to push
through the tuition law, but coalition politicians have given so
many different reasons for imposing the fees that room exists
for fleshing out a priority objective that truly benefits the
country. Petr Nečas spoke of using low tuition to promote the
natural sciences, technical fields and biomedicine, while charging
more for law, journalism, political science and economics. It's
probably time for the CR to decide whether it wants to have a
supportive industrial policy that promotes Mittelstand
enterprises, like in Germany, or merely an all-powerful
electrostate that concentrates first and foremost on rearing the
lawyers, journalists and politicians who allow it to thrive.
