Czech politicians are learning that the worst kind of enemy is the one you can't attack. ANO, with its dominating 30% position, is bad enough as an enemy, but it is eminently attackable because of Andrej Babiš's past and his ongoing conflicts of interest. Much worse as an enemy are the Pirates, because they are the innocent darlings whose popularity only rises as rival politicians try to sink their ship. MP Miroslav Kalousek of TOP 09 has found what he hopes is an opening. Unlike Václav Klaus Sr., who merely belittles the Pirates as being opinionless and dangerous, Kalousek is trying to get them on the much worse sin of hypocrisy. "Wherever it is an issue of increasing the all-knowing, prying and repressive role of the state," he told Právo, "the Pirates vote faithfully with ANO, the Communists and SPD." Pirates acting as law enforcers on the high seas are indeed an anomaly. Perhaps it's time for Kalousek to draft an updated, Pirated version of his 2016 List of Unfreedoms.
