Final Word from Monday, April 3, 2023

Pres. Petr Pavel will meet this morning with three people who were chosen by an advisory panel led by political commentator Jan Kysela and will then announce that he is nominating them to the Constitutional Court. This will apparently be the first time Pavel has met with the candidates in this capacity and will also be the first time the public officially hears their names. Czech TV asked Kysela last week if any current justices of the Constitutional Court are on his list, and he replied that they are not. This apparently means that not even justices who voted in early 2021 to strike down key parts of the election law will be reappointed. It was that decision by the Constitutional Court that ultimately gave the ruling parties the confidence to run as multiparty coalitions in an effort to sideline Andrej Babiš in the 2021 parliamentary elections. The Court decision also ultimately helped Pavel get elected. The justices themselves will now be sidelined. As the Czechs like to say, no good deed goes unpunished.
