Why not kill two birds with one stone and merge the jobs of the president and the army chief of staff? Such a move would no doubt please a large number of freedom-loving Havelian voters, analysts and journalists by limiting the future role of politicians of the Miloš Zeman and Václav Klaus sort. It would also be a step on the domestic level toward the dictatorship that is the inevitable outcome of the West's race toward financial ruin. When this dictatorship finally arrives, those who support the militarization of Czech politics will greet it with open arms. Gen. Petr Pavel, who is the preferred presidential candidate of some Havelians, told ČT24 that he sees no great contradiction in a soldier trained by the Warsaw Pact taking a top position in Nato, because only the political leadership changed after 1989. With this in mind, wouldn't the stoic Pavel make the perfect candidate for the transition from democracy to dictatorship? [Czech Republic Interview Czech TV general]
