Russia launched what is being called a full-scale invasion of Ukraine this morning. As of this writing, it's not clear where it will end. The scariest part of Russian Pres. Vladimir Putin's war declaration this morning was when he said that the purpose of the special military operation is to "protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years. And for this purpose we will strive to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine and to bring to justice those who have committed numerous bloody crimes against civilians, including citizens of the Russian Federation." He plans to do it without an "occupation" but in a way that "[protects] Russia itself from those who have taken Ukraine hostage and are trying to use it against our country and its people." Putin is clearly seeking to intimidate these people, perhaps even to get them to go into exile. The Czech government should probably concentrate its humanitarian efforts now on helping these individuals. [ Czech Republic Donbas Kyiv ]
