The new German government won't build new nuclear plants or recommission recently closed ones, but neither will it stand in the way of EU countries that want nuclear power in their energy mix. The Financial Times reported yesterday that Berlin has signaled to Paris that it will no longer block French efforts to ensure that nuclear power is treated on par with renewable energy in EU legislation. This is good news for Czechs, because German Amb. Andreas Künne had openly disputed the CR's nuclear-energy policy. He could now take a walk down Malá Strana and pass his anti-nuclear hat to French Amb. Stéphane Crouzat, because it's now his country that is opposing the Czech nuclear program. PM Petr Fiala is addressing the issue on the EU level but hasn't announced any promising results. His biggest ally might instead be Bavarian PM Markus Söder, not only because "nothing in Berlin works without him," but also because he's counting on getting a lot of that Czech nuclear power.
