One theory is that STAN won't bring down the Fiala government tonight because its chairman, Interior Min. Vít Rakušan, knew in advance about the bitcoin transaction and ODS has the proof. Rakušan insisted on Czech TV yesterday that he didn't know about the deal. He also used the familiar political dodge "at this time" repeatedly to explain his party's behavior before and during the no-confidence vote. What he didn't mention is STAN's showing in the election polls. If the plan of Pres. Petr Pavel is to support Rakušan as the pro-democratic PM of a future ANO-STAN government, the numbers don't work out at this time. ANO and STAN are hovering around 100 seats in Parliament in the weekly STEM survey for CNN Prima News, which means they might need the "undemocratic extremists" SPD or Stačilo! to form a government. That would defeat the purpose. Unless Rakušan can find a way to boost his party's numbers (or ANO's), the only democratic government he'll be able to save is Fiala's.
