In a few years, if he survives in politics, Petr Fiala will likely fight to reinstate deliveries of Russian natural gas to the EU, just as he is now fighting the ETS2 emissions allowances that he helped to introduce. He'll come to the conclusion that the ban on Russian energy, like the CO2 allowances, was "overambitious" and had a negative impact on Czechs. In the meantime, he's joining Friedrich Merz in putting pressure on Slovak PM Robert Fico to stop blocking the 18th sanctions package as a way to secure an EU exemption until 2034 for buying Russian gas. At the same time, Fiala is declining to participate in the purchase of Patriots and other U.S. weapons for delivery to Ukraine and prefers to focus on the Czech ammunition program. The priority, according to National Security Adviser Tomáš Pojar, is to buy shells from domestic producers for delivery to Ukraine.
