When Bavarian PM Markus Söder was in Prague on Dec. 12, 2024, Czech PM Petr Fiala talked about "ensuring secure and reliable electricity supplies for both the CR and Bavaria" and about connecting the electricity grids as one of the ways to "bring us cheaper and more accessible energy." Fiala forgot to mention that, under the memorandum he signed with Söder, the cheaper electricity was only supposed to flow in one direction - from the CR to Bavaria. Söder didn't mention the memorandum on Mon. when he hosted Andrej Babiš in Munich, but he did say that Bavaria has "utmost interest" in Czech energy projects and "strongly supports" them. Babiš said in reply that he's glad Söder doesn't have a problem with nuclear power. New Czech reactors are still a decade down the road, but Babiš and Vice PM Karel Havlíček will understand, unlike apparently Fiala, that reliable baseload nuclear power is a huge bargaining chip in negotiations about whether "Germany is on our side" in addressing the EU's problems.
